Same here. I didn't see her for over a month, so I adopted another from a shady guy. Turned out that one was pregnant, so now I have five cats. The lost one showed up and is now a very friendly lap cat.

You need to be patient & build his trust I had a kitten who was just like this when she first came. You have to let them come out and their own time let them smell your finger and give them a chance to acclimatize especially if there's another cat there. Also a bit of string can help. He's a real darling and he's been through a lot 😔

Because you keep the new kitten in a cage and feed him there for 1 week, so he knows that you don't want to harm him, and then after 1 week you let him out.

I tricked three month old kitten into coming in my front door and then closed the door. I couldn't find it for the longest time. I tore my house apart looking for her, almost two weeks of never seeing her, but food was getting eaten and the litter box was being used. After looking under my bed for the millionth time, I noticed the materiel on the bottom of the box spring was shredded, she was inside the box spring. OK, now look. If you are going to catch him with food as bait, that's exactly the wrong way. He needs to associate you with food and safety together, so you can't put the plate down and then try to snatch him up from behind. Put the plate down while you gently talk to him, then go sit several feet away when he comes to eat and keep talking. Do this several times, a little closer each time. You can also take something nice like a treat and offer it in your fingers. Let him do the moving, keep talking softly, don't startle him. He doesn't know he's safe yet.

yea thats how our black cat got the name spooky when adopted him he was so skittish, but cute, word of advice give the kitty space to warm up and dont release in places that will let them get under where you cant get them if they get into trouble or they will never come out.
